$60,000 Bank of America Grant in Support of Summer Youth Employment Program


United Way of Long Island received a $60,000 Grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation for the Bank of America Summer Youth Employment Program. Thirty-six youth (ages 15 – 21) will work in 16 non-profit agencies across communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has provided a $60,000 grant to United Way of Long Island to administer a Long Island based summer youth employment program for low to moderate income students. United Way has served as both the fiscal agent and the employer of record for the program for the past three years it has been funded. Working with United Way are the Nassau and Suffolk County Departments of Youth, who help to identify both program participants and host community agency sites.

To fulfill one of its goals, the program places students from representative communities in the National Conference of Mayors, a non-partisan organization for cities with populations of 30,000 or more, in non-profit agency host sites.

This year, 36 youth (ages 15-21) will work in 16 non-profit agencies across communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties.  During the course of the six-week program - from July 6th to August 14th - students will work in a variety of capacities from administrative roles in an office to assisting with summer camp programs and helping out at a local farmer’s market.

An important program component each year is the Professional Development and Community Service Day, a day for all the students to come together, network, and attend workshops conducted by Bank of America senior staff with the goal of providing financial literacy, career guidance and skill development. Students will have the opportunity to meet with Bank of America Long Island President Bob Isaksen at the all-day event, conducted on July 22, 2015 at Bank of America’s Melville offices.
