On May 22, 2013 at 1:00pm, Gulf War Veteran Bruce Babbington and his two children ages eleven and thirteen, will become the first candidates of DSA’s Hunter Temporary Shelter program. The family, whose existing home located at 164 South Bayview Ave, Amityville N.Y. suffered severe damage due to Superstorm Sandy six months ago, has experienced absolutely zero progress bringing it back to an inhabitable condition.
DSA, utilizing its supply chain process, has coordinated efforts with various contributors to help the Babbingtons regain some normalcy in their lives. After securing a $15,000 grant provided by the United Way of Long Island and an additional $10,000 of donations in time and material, the shelter is now move in ready.
The donated structure is a 288 sq. ft. temporary Hunter Shelter placed on the Babbington’s front lawn. The original prototype was erected over three years ago in Riverhead, Long Island. Now having endured a hurricane, blizzard and several tropical storms, the Hunter Shelter is a 100 % modular and sustainable shelter system that is production ready for high rate manufacture here on Long Island. The flood resistant and hurricane-hardened structure can be erected on the property of any homeowner and is reusable for other emergencies. When grid power is not available, the Hunter Shelter can be upgraded with a Nextek Power Systems STAR™ Portable Solar Power Generating System that is manufactured by Vision Quest Lighting, on Long Island.
Former Congressman George Hochbrueckner worked with Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer to expedite all necessary permits. “I applaud DSA for providing a great product that will provide shelter for a Long Island Veteran and his family as they continue to recover from Superstorm Sandy,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “With the help of this type of business and community cooperation, we will continue to rebuild our neighborhoods, stronger and more resilient.” The project has also gained the support of Congressman Tim Bishop, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, and the Department of Labor.
