Project Warmth Emergency Fuel Fund Provides Relief
March 17, 2020 (Deer Park) – This winter’s relentless bitter cold weather adds to the challenges that numerous Long Islanders are already facing. The importance of having a heated house is significant as many people are spending increased time in their homes, often while working remotely or sheltering in place. To combat the increased energy costs, Ørsted and Eversource are supporting United Way of Long Island’s Project Warmth Emergency Fuel Fund with a $10,000 contribution.
“We want to thank our friends at United Way of Long Island for the incredible work they do to help assist families in our communities that are struggling during these difficult times. We are proud to partner with an organization that helps families in difficult financial situations,” said Dennis Galvam, Manager – Outreach Planning for Strategic Projects, at Eversource - Offshore Wind. “At Eversource, we believe that no family should have to choose between putting food on their table, heating their homes, or keeping their lights on, and through our partnership with United Way we are working together to make sure that the Project Warmth Emergency Fund is there for families that need it the most.”

With Ørsted and Eversource’s 50/50 partnership new to the Long Island region, their companies are soon to have a prominent presence in the area as leaders in the green energy industry, with two offshore wind projects currently underway.

Collectively, we can make a real impact on our neighbors, especially those who are struggling to make ends meet as a result of the economic impacts of COVID-19.”
Project Warmth, Long Island’s only island wide non-governmental emergency heating fund, is available all winter as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity, many of whom have already exhausted all other options for assistance by this point in the season.

Since its inception in 1994, Project Warmth has provided more than $10 million in emergency funding to more than 94,000 children and adults. Eligible applicants include residents who are experiencing a heating emergency, have a low or empty oil tank, have received a disconnection notice, and can demonstrate financial hardship. This is especially critical for seniors, veterans, families with young children and people with disabilities.
