JOSHUA C.: Becoming a Robotics Engineer
Joshua is one of our 2012 DREAMS for Youth scholarship recipients. Joshua is a middle school student in Westbury. He is noted for his abilities as a student of robotics which came to light during his attendance in United Way of Long Island’s Westbury Community School afterschool program. As his Robotics Instructor, Dr. Charles Berger indicated, “Josh shows real potential. I enjoyed his enthusiasm during my class. Obliviously, his enthusiasm is continuing and he will be an amazing engineer in the future.”

Joshua received a $300 DREAMS for Youth scholarship so that he could attend the Long Island First Robotics Summer Robotics program on the campus of Dowling College. The remainder of the tuition of $700 was covered by another donor who chose to remain anonymous.

Joshua was placed in the advanced Robotics program because of his talents and abilities and was one of the shining stars at the camp. As the sole middle school student in the advanced group of the Robotics camp, Joshua’s team learned all the systems that comprised a 120 pound robot and built and programmed the robot to perform tasks.  Despite transportation issues including a one-hour drive to the camp each way, Joshua’s family was very supportive in getting him to the program at Dowling College each day.  Joshua has the potential to become an engineer and thanks to the Pace Foundation, United Way of Long Island and his family, we are supporting and nurturing his gifts.
