Putting People First on The Journey to End AIDS United Way of Long Island Celebrates 35th Anniversary of World AIDS Day

More than 140 guests attended the Nassau-Suffolk HIV Health Services Planning Council’s special event to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of World AIDS Day observed annually on December 1st. This year’s theme was ‘The Story of Us’ emphasizing the power of voices to unite by sharing experiences, remembering those whom we have lost, and standing together in the fight against HIV.

The event commenced with an invocation and candlelight ceremony followed by remarks from Dr. Gregson Pigott, Commissioner, Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Awards were presented to individuals in recognition of their efforts to increase public awareness, identify newly diagnosed individuals, reconnect individuals who have fallen out of care, and for the providers outstanding care and support.

2023 Award recipients included Ernest Burke, Survivor; Debra Brown, Senior Education Specialist, Stonybrook School of Health Professions; the Leadership Training Institute; and Denise Ragsdale, Survivor.

There are nearly 6,000 Long Islanders of all ages living with HIV/AIDS. The Nassau-Suffolk HIV Health Services Planning Council with the support of United Way of Long Island provides effective planning for the region and promotes development of HIV/AIDS health services, personnel, and facilities which meet identified health needs in a cost-effective manner, reduce inefficiencies, and address the needs of uninsured and under-insured HIV infected individuals.
