Each year young men and women between the ages of 10-24 come to the Timothy Hill Children's Ranch in Riverhead. Students are placed in the Timothy Hill Ranch residential program usually in a desperate time of crisis that causes them to face difficult times in school resulting in poor attendance, study habits, classroom behavior and reading levels. On a monthly basis, the staff at the organization's Learning Center have students write an essay about where they came from and where they are today.This serves not only as a writing assignment, but it also is therapeutic.   When Ivan Rodriguez’s family fell on hard times, he dropped out of high school to support them by working. But when he could not find a job, he turned to desperate measures to make ends meet. He was arrested and incarcerated, and immediately decided to turn his life around. Ivan enrolled in United Way of Long Island’s YouthBuild program and has since taken the Long Island community by storm.
