From Surviving to Thriving

Kristyne is an ambitious young woman who aspires to her future career as a neuropsychologist. As a United Way of Long Island D.R.E.A.M.S. For Youth Scholarship recipient, she is working toward making her dream a reality.

She is an old soul, wise beyond her years. Although going through an extreme hardship in her life, Kristyne has continued to persist and work hard through her studies and volunteerism. As a survivor of abuse at the hands of a close family member, she was carrying a burden that no one at any age should carry. She didn't let this destroy her; she ultimately found her voice and is now choosing to follow her passion of helping other victims find their voice.

In 2018, Kristyne enrolled as a psychology major with a minor in neuropsychology at SUNY Old Westbury. Financial assistance from the D.R.E.A.M.S. For Youth Scholarship is helping her achieve her career goals. Influenced by her mother’s profession as a social worker, Krisytne decided, in eighth grade, that she wanted to become a neuropsychologist. Her professional path is also influenced by her passion for working with children – Kristyne’s future career is slated to include diagnosing children with developmental disabilities, such as ADD/ADHD, and finding and directing patients to sources of therapeutic needs. Ultimately, she dreams of opening her own private practice.

Now a sophomore, Kristyne is appreciating what college has to offer. While time management has been the largest challenge, this young woman is succeeding academically. She looks forward to taking Psychology of Gender and Psychological Themes in Literature courses. She is even preparing for summer, already, by researching a neuroscience summer internship program that specialize in aging on the brain. Her dreams are coming to fruition!
