John Corrado, United Way of Long Island’s Board Chair and President of Suffolk Transportation Services /Suffolk Bus Company announced that he will match the proceeds of the recent sponsored Walk-A-Thon, presenting a $10,000 donation to the United Way of Long Island’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
The employees of STS/SBC along with friends and family joined together for the first annual United Way of Long Island Walk-A-Thon. The event was held this past Fall on October 21st at the Holtsville Ecology Center. There were over 500 attendees ranging from 3 months to over 75 years of age. One of the many moments that stood out during the event was the sight of a family pushing their handicapped daughter over the finish line as the volunteers cheered her on and placed the lap stamp on her out stretched hand. The look on her face is something every person that witnessed it will remember forever.
Pledges of $2.00 per lap, raffles and donations from the Transportation Workers Union Local 252, WB Mason, Filter Fresh and other supporters of United Way, raised over $9,791.50 from the event and provided all the walkers with the necessary essentials to make a good day even better!
The Walk-A-Thon Committee would like to thank the team of over 30 volunteers, as well as Mr. Corrado whose generosity of spirit and dedication was gratefully appreciated along with the continued support of his organization and employees on behalf of the United Way of Long Island.
