Team Mission United: Carly

13 Marathons Completed - 1st New York City Marathon
Research Assistant, Macquarie
Carly, a native Long Islander and current Bostonian, recently retired from running. That is until she discovered the opportunity to support a cause close to her heart while running her first New York City marathon.

Carly's motivation to run began after witnessing her sister's medical struggles post-stroke. As a result, Carly ran the Boston Marathon – her first marathon - in support of stroke research. Since then, she has run twelve additional marathons for charity. This year, Carly wants "to give back to the place where I'm from" by running to raise funds for Long Island veterans as a member of United Way of Long Island’s Team Mission United.

A number of Carly's family members are active military members, or veterans, including her brother. She understands the challenges that military members and their families face, especially when returning from overseas. Running the New York City marathon is Carly’s way of ensuring Long Island veterans receive the mental, physical and emotional support services needed to live a comfortable and independent life.

Much of Carly’s time is consumed by training, as she states, "Running a marathon takes a lot of energy and focus.” But she notes that running for a charity is a rewarding way to spend time, “Doing something you’re passionate about while simultaneously giving back is a win-win situation.”

We are proud to have Carly on our team!
