Problem
For many children on Long Island, the chance to achieve greatness is passing them by because they are not prepared to succeed both academically and socially. Nearly a quarter of fourth graders on Long Island are not reading at grade level and nearly a quarter of New York eighth graders are at risk of dropping out of school.
Solution
United Way of Long Island partners with organizations that share our commitment to providing young, underserved children a strong academic start and youth with the means to succeed through innovative initiatives that
- teach parents, many of them homeless, how to develop their young children’s language and reading skills.
- provide support groups for mothers so they can give their children the highest level of care.
- inform all parents on Long Island that everyday moments can be used to teach children fundamental skills.
- award enrichment, academic and community service scholarships to teens so they can pursue their dreams.
Results
United Way of Long Island initiatives and community partner support have led to
- more children ready to learn by first grade.
- hundreds of teenagers pursuing their academic and extra-curricular passions.
- parents having the confidence that they are providing a strong foundation for their children to succeed in school.
