YouthBuild Students Hired at The Home Depot
The Home Depot in Deer Park has hired several students from United Way of Long Island’s YouthBuild program to join their team.
“The students enrolled in YouthBuild Long Island have already taken the first step towards a more productive future by participating in the program. The Home Depot is happy to be part of helping them take the next step,” said Susan Palladino, Operations Manager at Home Depot’s Deer Park location
United Way’s YouthBuild Long Island is a free youth and community development program, and alternative school, that addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. At YouthBuild, low-income young men and women, ages 18 to 24, work towards their General Equivalency Diploma (GED) while learning hands-on job skills.
YouthBuild places a strong focus on Green collar job opportunities in energy efficiency, renewables, weatherization, Energy Star construction, and home performance. YouthBuild’s curriculum integrates academics with life skills. Students spend 8 to 12 months dividing their time between a housing construction site, and United Way’s E3 Career Training Center, which offers high school/college readiness programs, construction training, job readiness, leadership development, counseling and job development.
