United Way Supports Packed to Empower Event for Girls

United Way of Long Island was a proud supporter of Brea Alexis Baker’s “Packed to Empower” event held in December at Dodd Middle School in Freeport to stuff backpacks for young girls who are living in poverty in Freeport and abroad. Baker, a senior at Freeport High School, formed the Head to Toe Foundation in 8th grade when she first developed the idea to distribute backpacks.

Partnering with the Women’s Fund of Long Island, United Way provided a $2,000 community service scholarship to Baker, recipient of the 2011 Shapiro-McCormick Young Women’s Leader Award from the Fund. United Way was represented at the Packed to Empower event by several young women from its Dreams for Youth Scholarship Program’s Young Leader’s Board.
