November 9, 2013 Deer Park, NY – The United Way of Long Island has long been a supporter of services for Long Island’s Veterans and Military, who have risked and continue to risk their lives to defend our freedom, national security and way of life.
United Way’s Military Family Assistance Project offers critical support services to Long Island military, reservist and National Guard personnel active in Operation Enduring Freedom and/or Operation Iraqi Freedom/ New Dawn. In partnership with five local agencies, this project provides case management for military personnel and their families to secure needed services, financial assistance for emergencies, and employment/job training for returning military personnel. Our 2013 project partners are Clubhouse of Suffolk/Suffolk Country United Veterans, Family Service League, Hope for the Warriors, Mental Health Association of Nassau County, and United Veteran’s Beacon House. United Way’s VetsBuild project provides job training and placement to veterans in the emerging weatherization and energy efficiency field. This 5-week program is offered at no cost to the veteran and includes training in a state-of-the-art facility outfitted with the latest technology and equipment. Vet students are offered hands-on instruction, an entry-level OSHA training, one-on-one counseling and job placement assistance, including interviews with green energy businesses. Graduates interested in developing a career in weatherization are connected to advanced training options. The program is offered collaboratively by United Way and United Veterans Beacon House.
