The employees of Suffolk Transportation Services/Suffolk Bus Company along with friends and family all joined together for the first annual United Way of Long Island Walk-A-Thon. The event was held this past Fall on October 21st at the Holtsville Ecology Center. There were over 500 attendees ranging from 3 months to over 75 years of age. One of the many moments that stands out, was watching a family push their handicapped daughter over the finish line as the volunteers cheered her on and placed the lap stamp on her out stretched hand. The look on her face is something every person that witnessed it will remember forever.
Pledges of $2.00 per lap, raffles and donations from the Transportation Workers Union Local 252, WB Mason, Filter Fresh and other supporters of United Way, raised over $9,791.50 and provided all the walkers with the necessary essentials to make a good day even better!
John Corrado, United Way of Long Island’s Board Chair and President of STS/SBC, announced a corporate match of the proceeds of the event and presented a $10,000 donation to the United Way of Long Island’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
The Walk-A-Thon Committee would like to thank the team of over 30 volunteers whose generosity of spirit and dedication was gratefully appreciated along with the continued support of their organization and their employees on behalf of the United Way of Long Island.
