School Supplies Sought For United Way's Stuff-A-Bus Campaign

During the month of August, United Way of Long Island is inviting companies to collect school supplies on behalf of children in underserved school districts.  The supplies will be donated to local districts as part of United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus Campaign.

Long Island companies are invited to collect the following items for students in need:  backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, washable markers, pencil cases, crayons, glue/glue sticks, scissors, rulers and hand wipes.  Items will be collected at individual companies and at United Way of Long Island’s office in Deer Park from August 1-September 10.

According to a new survey by the Pew Research Center’s Social and Demographic Trends Project, since the recession began, more than half of all adults in the workforce—55 percent—say that they have either been unemployed, taken a pay cut, had their work hours reduced or have become involuntary part-time workers. Hardworking families have been struggling to pay necessary bills and many are unable to afford school supplies for their children.  As part of United Way’s focus on education initiatives, the Stuff-A-Bus campaign hopes to help students from these families to prepare for school and focus on succeeding academically.
