Horace Hagedorn's legacy lives on through a $500,000 gift to United Way of Long Island to purchase a mobile dental unit designed to bring dental care to underserved communities on Long Island. The grant is from the Long Island Community Foundation- Horace and Amy Hagedorn Long Island Fund and is the largest gift in United Way of Long Island's history.
Approached by United Way, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System has agreed to operate the mobile dental unit purchased by the Hagedorn grant, which will enhance North Shore-LIJ's Mobile Health Long Island program. This program includes an existing mobile pediatric health unit.
To help pay for the operations of the dental unit and to increase the locations that the pediatric unit serves, United Way of Long Island launched an employee workplace campaign in May 2005 at North Shore-LIJ's Long Island locations. The campaign involves more than 25,000 employees and 23 medical facilities. This is the largest workplace campaign launched by United Way of Long Island in many years.
This partnership between North Shore-LIJ and United Way is an example of United Way's focus on Community Impact. Rather than simply fund others, we are looking for opportunities such as this where United Way adds value by developing an initiative, bringing together concerned members of the community, focusing our collective efforts on a pressing need and most importantly, showing outcomes and effective results.
