Our History
From the days of its birth in the 1950s with the successful series of philanthropic events known as "Star Nights", the roots of United Way of Long Island have become enmeshed in the fabric of our community.

In its infancy in the early '60s, it became obvious that the "United Fund of Long Island" was an idea upon which the fundraising future of the island was hinged. An overwhelming tide of support for the fund grew, generating an outpouring of seed money from seven of Long Island's most prominent firms: Franklin National Bank, New York Telephone, Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp., Long Island Lighting Company, Meadowbrook National Bank, Security National Bank and Sperry Gyroscope.

Our Board of Trustees met for the first time in June 1964 and the United Fund held its first campaign in the fall of 1965. Throughout the remainder of the '60s and on into the '70s when our current name, United Way of Long Island, was adopted, countless Long Islanders from all walks of life contributed their time, expertise and heart in making United Way a symbol of strength and caring.

After four decades of changing and improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders, United Way continues to have a meaningful, measurable impact. We have distributed more than $250 million to support Long Islanders in need over the years. Our ability to give continues to grow, thanks to the support of generous Long Island individuals, businesses, nonprofits and foundations.
