HIV/AIDS Grants Management
With more than 5,700 resident living with HIV/AIDS, Long Island has the highest number of AIDS cases of any suburban area in the nation and more cases than in 26 states. United Way of Long Island is the technical support agency for three sources of federal funds to provide resources for people who are HIV positive including:
Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act, Part A & Part B
Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA)
United Way administers funding for Part A & HOPWA through an RFP process.
From federal Ryan White Care Act funding through Nassau County, United Way of Long Island has granted more than $32 million in the past six years to community-based organizations to care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
We also administer and staff the Nassau-Suffolk HIV Health Services Planning Council, a community-based regional group responsible for coordinating the community response to improving services for people living with HIV and AIDS.
The planning group works to develop and update the Comprehensive Service Plan for the region, thus ensuring that there is no duplication of services through these funding streams. The Comprehensive Service Plan for HIV/AIDS Services 2009-2011 addresses health and human services for people with HIV disease in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Long Island, New York. It can be used by anyone involved in planning, funding, delivering, receiving, or measuring the effectiveness of HIV services. The Plan’s vision is to provide HIV positive individuals in Nassau and Suffolk Counties with a comprehensive, coordinated system of culturally and linguistically appropriate state-of-the-art primary and specialty HIV care and supportive services designed to improve and maintain overall health status and quality of life.
In 2007, the HIV/AIDS Grants Management Department at United Way was honored for their work in the field of HIV/AIDS and received the New York State Health Commissioner’s 2007 World AIDS Day Award.
