The federally funded Emergency Food and Shelter Program provides assistance for food, utilities and shelter to individuals and families in emergency situations who meet the federal eligibility guidelines. United Way of Long Island administers the program for the Long Island region.
Last year, 20 local nonprofit community partner organizations helped distribute
$1,250,760
in emergency aid to Long Islanders in need. United Way of Long Island does not distribute the money directly to individuals but works with these organizations.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program will receive more than $1.23 million in federal grant money this year, a 1% decrease from last year. Nassau County has been awarded $566,128 and Suffolk County has been awarded $669,584.
An emergency grant may assist with up to one month’s rent, mortgage, utility payment and food for individuals and families under the federal eligibility guidelines. Funds will be available for distribution in April through health and human service agencies in both counties.
A local board, comprised of representatives from United Way of Long Island, The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, the Long Island Council of Churches and other community partners, will determine how the funds will be awarded to each county. Funds will then be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs run by local nonprofit agencies.
