Community Schools Project
Community Schools Project
Through the generous support of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, United Way of Long Island developed the Community Schools Project which offers unique services designed to improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged students.
To help reduce the chances of educational failure and drop-out rates, the project provides a safe and supervised after-school environment where students can get homework help, participate in physical activities, explore new skills and talents, prepare for careers, and develop relationships with peers as well as adults. The project combines teaching and learning with an array of social, health, child and youth development services, while emphasizing community and parental involvement.
The Community Schools Project currently serves middle school students from the Westbury School District. Plans are currently underway to replicate the project to serve middle school students from the Brentwood, Bay Shore, and Central Islip school districts.
Fredrick D. Schaufeld Scholarship Fund
In serving the Westbury community, United Way of Long Island administers the Fredrick D. Schaufeld Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to academically successful and economically disadvantaged graduates of Westbury High School. The program seeks to enroll students who have a history of overcoming adversity. Many youngsters have multidimensional challenges such as living in poverty, growing up in foster care, or living in gang infested neighborhoods. The program creates a transition as students further their education by going to college or technical school. Students become a member of the "Schaufeld Scholarship Fund Family” and role models for other students as well as their siblings who may be growing-up with the same hardships.
