The East End of Long Island is a special place to United Way. The five townships that comprise the East End have different health and human care service needs than the rest of the island. A higher number of East End families live below the poverty level compared to the rest of Suffolk County. A higher percentage of seniors live on the East End compared to the rest of the county. Homelessness on the East End is attributed in part to the dramatic rise in housing costs and insufficient low-cost housing. There is also a shortage of public transportation, which affects the quality of life for many of our friends and neighbors living on the East End. We have targeted this area and its special needs so that all families on Long Island might live productive, self-sufficient lives.
East End Community Partners
East End Volunteers
United Way of Long Island's East End Initiative is comprised of volunteers from the North and South Forks who understand the different needs of the various communities that make up the East End of Long Island. The East End Campaign Cabinet is the fundraising arm of this initiative, and the East End Allocations Panel reviews our East End member agencies annually to ensure that United Way dollars have the greatest impact possible in East End communities.

Nine United Way community partners are headquartered on the East End that are reviewed by the East End Allocations Panel. Last year alone, these agencies served more than 37,000 people who live on the North and South Forks. These agencies provide a variety of services that address the health and human care needs specific to the East End. They provide affordable quality daycare for working parents, shelter for abused women and children, medical transportation and friendly visits for the elderly and indigent, adult literacy programs and food and clothing to those in need.
Additional United Way community partners, which are headquartered throughout Long Island, serve individuals and families who reside on the East End. These agencies provide a variety of services and programs that include cancer support groups, teen pregnancy prevention programs, information and referral for East End residents diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis, and recreational programs for children at risk.
Central Suffolk Hospital, Eastern Long Island Hospital and Southampton Hospital are headquartered on the East End and are also United Way community partners. Therefore they are a part of the East End Initiative.
