DREAMS for Youth Scholarship Program

The DREAMS for Youth Scholarship Program grants awards in three areas: 

Academic: Assists with costs associated with educational goals at a college, university, private or vocational school. Applicants must be between grades 7-12, demonstrate financial need and a commitment to community service. Financial awards range from $500 to $5,000.

Enrichment: Assists with costs associated with activities that enrich the mind, body and spirit. Examples may include music, singing, dance, or art lessons; driver's education; sports training; specialized summer camps etc. Funds may be used for enrollment fees or related equipment. Applicants must be in grades 7-12, demonstrate financial need and a commitment to community service. Financial awards range from $100 to $2,500.

Community Service: Awarded to a youth-serving nonprofit agency or school, mentoring a group of youth in grades 7-12 on a distinct service project. Examples may include beautification of a nursing home, yard work at a community center etc. Financial awards range from $500 to $5,000.

Scholarships on Long Island
Since its inception in 2002, United Way of Long Island has awarded a total of 173 scholarships and/or grants totaling $482,675. The DREAMS for Youth Advisory Board, comprised of grade 7-12 students, works under the guidance of United Way staff to make award decisions.
