Recent Scholarship and Grant Recipients
- The DREAMS for Youth Scholarship Program makes awards in three areas: academic, enrichment and community service. The academic and enrichment awards are made to Long Island youth between seventh to 12th grade who demonstrate financial need. Community service awards are made to youth serving agencies and schools mentoring youth in a community service project.
- Since the program’s inception in 2002, United Way of Long Island has awarded a total of 99 scholarships totaling $277,654 through this program.
- The DREAMS for Youth Scholarship Program was established by United Way’s Youth Advisory Board, led by teens from Long Island schools, along with the late Ben Pace.
- United Way’s Youth Advisory Board works with United Way of Long Island to review all applications and select scholarship recipients twice a year.
- Enrichment scholarships are awarded for music, singing, dance or art lessons, computer graphics training, specialized summer camps, sports training, acting, photography, fashion design and more. Funds may be used for enrollment fees, instruments and/or supplies. Scholarships range from $100 to $2,500.
- Academic scholarships are awarded for educational goals at a college, university, private or vocational school. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.
- Community service grants are awarded to United Way of Long Island youth-serving agencies or schools. Proposals are accepted from agencies interested in mentoring youth in a community service project. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.
