Problem
On Long Island, 165,334 people live below the federal poverty level, including thousands of families struggling to make ends meet and individuals suffering from debilitating illness, disabilities and natural and man-made emergencies.
Solution
United Way of Long Island is addressing many of the issues faced by our neighbors in need with community partner support and initiatives that
- help families facing financial crisis stay warm throughout the winter.
- provide emergency food and shelter grants to those struggling financially.
- support the families of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with a variety of services.
- provide assistance to families and individuals who are struggling during the aftermath of natural disasters.
- ensure easy sources of information and crisis intervention to those in need.
Results
United Way of Long Island initiatives and community partner support have led to
- thousands of families better able to keep their jobs, their homes and their dignity.
- more seniors able to stay in their homes and live on their own without fear.
- families and soldiers having peace of mind that their loved ones are supported during and after deployment.
- dozens of people able to rebuild their lives here on Long Island or back home after hurricanes and other disasters.
