HIV/AIDS Grants Management Initiatives

HIV/AIDS on Long Island
Problem
• Long Island has the highest number of AIDS cases of any suburban area in the nation.
• It has more AIDS cases than in 26 states.
• More than 5,000 Long Islanders are living with HIV/AIDS

Solution
• From federal Ryan White Care Act funding through Nassau County, United Way of Long Island has granted more than $32 million in the past six years to community-based organizations to care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
• United Way administers and staffs the Nassau-Suffolk HIV Health Services Planning Council and the Nassau-Suffolk HIV Care Network, which are the two main community-based regional groups responsible for coordinating the community response to improving services for people living with HIV and AIDS.
• United Way also manages the federal Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program to build sustainable, affordable energy-efficient housing for people living with AIDS. It has served 250 individuals during the past 10 years of the program, bringing $15 million into the region.
• The HIV/AIDS Grants Management Department at United Way of Long Island is the recipient of the New York State Health Commissioner’s 2007 World AIDS Day Award. Each year on World AIDS Day, selected individuals/organizations/groups from around New York State are honored for their work in the field of HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS Grants Management
In 1997, United Way of Long Island became the lead agency for three different sources of federal funds to provide resources for people who are HIV positive including the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act, Parts A & B, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). United Way administers these sources of funding through an RFP process.
