Mission United Partners

United Way of Long Island's Mission United initiative supports programs that serve Long Island's Military, Veterans and their families in the areas of case management and emergency financial assistance. In 2016, our partner agences served 91 military veterans and their families.

Association for Mental Health & Wellness
Provides emergency assistance to financially struggling veterans and their families as well as supportive case management through peer counselors who help veterans connect with eligible services including PTSD support groups, job training programs, food pantries, educational opportunities and especially permanent housing for homeless veteran families.

Family Service League
Provides emergency aid to financially struggling military personnel, veterans and their families including rent arrears, car repairs, furniture acquisition, critical transportation and holiday assistance.

Mental Health Association of Nassau County
Provides emergency assistance to financially struggling veterans and their families as wel as peer case managers to help returning veterans connect with resources and sponsors troubled military families' participation in local veterans' wellness and mental health events.

United Veterans Beacon House
Provides emergency assistance to financially struggling veterans and their families including rent, utilities, food, and transportation costs. Screens veterans and connects them to eligible supportive services including veterans' benefits, VA treatment, housing and job training opportunities.

Success Stories

An Army veteran, suffering from PTSD and substance abuse, experienced episodes of homelessness following discharge after multiple tours of duty in a combat zone.  The Association for Mental Health and Wellness provided case management services, got him into substance abuse treatment, helped him enroll in college and provided financial aid for textbooks.
